The 2024 Green and Low-Carbon Innovation Forum – a key platform for global green technology exchanges – convened in the Hongkou district of Shanghai on Sept 9 for its sixth consecutive year.

As part of the Pujiang Innovation Forum, it brought together experts, industry leaders and international representatives to explore innovative pathways for a sustainable energy future.

With its theme of "Innovation Shapes a New Future Energy Pattern", the forum represented a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Shanghai local government, highlighting its commitment to driving sustainable development.

Guan Yetong, deputy governor of Hongkou district, stressed the critical need to address climate change – emphasizing China's dedication to green and low-carbon technologies as a response to environmental challenges and a commitment made to the world.

Zheng Guanghong, from the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, highlighted Shanghai's pioneering role in energy technology innovation – citing advances in clean energy, smart grids and hydrogen energy.

A key development at the forum was the launch of the Low-Carbon Technology Innovation Cooperation China (Shanghai) Trip exchange program.

Backed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the program will see 13 partners from over 10 countries – including Brunei, Egypt and Indonesia – embark on a six-day tour across China.

The initiative aims to foster international collaboration in low-carbon technologies through engagements with top universities, research institutions and companies in Shanghai.

Several key partnerships were forged at the forum, demonstrating a united commitment to advancing green technologies.

Notably, Anhui Yingmian Technology and Green Technology Bank (Shanghai) Technology Development Co Ltd joined forces with Shanghai Maritime University. They will develop key technologies for methanol-fueled ships – further promoting the use of methanol as a sustainable fuel in the transportation industry.

Presentations and panel discussions by influential experts were said to provide invaluable insights into future energy development. They covered topics such as hydrogen energy, biomass energy, photovoltaic cells and new energy storage – exploring development trends, challenges and innovative solutions.
