The 14th Shanghai Biennale, centred on the theme of "Cosmos Cinema", kicked off on Nov 9, 2023 at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai, and will continue through March 31, 2024.

The event is considered China's first international contemporary art biennale and has become the most influential event in Asia.

The exhibition is showcasing various art forms, exploring the relationship between cosmic phenomena and human life.

Anton Vidokle, who is based in New York, serves as the event's chief curator.

One of the highlights of the biennale is the "Cosmic Cinema" exhibition, which aims to explore the influence of the universe on our lives.

It features 79 artists and groups from 41 countries, including 17 Chinese artists. The exhibition examines the beauty, harmony, and infinite time and space of the cosmos, suggesting that cinema has the potential to recode our relationship with the universe.

The exhibition space, designed by COLLECTIVE, is divided into nine sections that focus on different aspects of human's connection with the cosmos.

The biennale's city programme, "Qingze Project 2023", is presented in two Shanghai urban spaces, exploring the connection between art and the city.

To enhance comprehension, the biennale published the book Cosmic Cinema Apocalypse in November, containing essays from the curators and publishing editor.

During the opening week, there was a roundtable discussion, a video art exchange programme and educational programmes for families to engage the audience and encourage exploration of the cosmos.
