Upcoming exhibitions by World Expo Museum in 2024

The World Expo Museum in Shanghai will present a variety of exhibitions with special artistic and cultural experiences in 2024.

1. Pure Elegance of Eastern Aesthetics - Highlights from the Japanese Collection of the Royal Ontario Museum, Canada

Dates: From Jan 27 to April 7

Venue: Exhibition Hall 1

This exhibition presents 85 artifacts from the Royal Ontario Museum's Japanese collection, showcasing the aesthetics of Japanese life during the Edo period (1600s-1860s) and the cultural connections between Japan and China. Through items such as tea utensils, lacquerware and ukiyo-e prints, it presents the craftsmanship of traditional artifacts, interpreting the unique beauty of Oriental culture.

2. Fiber Art Exhibition - The Reflective Memories

Dates: From Jan 30 to March 31

Venue: Exhibition Halls 2 and 3

The exhibition showcases 36 fiber installation artworks by renowned artists, interpreting the link between fiber art and nature. The unique beauty of fiber art serves as a window for the museum to link with installation art, allowing the audience to further explore the combination of life and art.

Dates: From Jan 30 to Feb 29

Venue: North Hall

In traditional Chinese culture, swallows, butterflies and fish have auspicious meanings. For the occasion of the Lunar Chinese New Year, the museum will display the installation artwork "Symmetrical Series - Kites" by contemporary artist Chen Fenwan, allowing the audience to interact closely with the artwork and experience joy that is exclusive to the festival.

4. Art in Posters - Japanese Classic Posters

Dates: From mid-April to mid-May

Venue: North Hall

The exhibition showcases the works of 14 top-level graphic designers. Spanning 40 years, 31 series and over 80 poster designs, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the designers' different dimensions of thinking, interpretations and expressions regarding nature, life and the future. It also showcases various forms of printing techniques and artistic interpretations.

5. Guangdong Metal-Framed Cloisonné in Qing Dynasty

Dates: From late April to late July

Venue: Exhibition Hall 1

A piece of Guangdong cloisonné reflects the exquisite fusion of Chinese and Western techniques in terms of shape, materials, crafting methods, colors, decorative patterns, and even painting techniques. The exhibition will allow the audience to appreciate the beauty of Guangdong cloisonne craftsmanship.

6. The Oriental Dream - A Dialogue between Shadow Puppetry and Ukiyoe Art

Dates: From May to November

Venue: Exhibition Halls 2 and 3

Using digital technology, the exhibition will present an immersive dialogue between Chinese shadow puppetry and Ukiyoe art, bridging the gap between contemporary digital language and traditional folk culture, providing the audience with a special experience of Oriental artistic aesthetics.

7. The Pan Yuliang Retrospective

Dates: From mid-August to mid-November

Venue: Exhibition Hall 1

Pan Yuliang (1895-1977) is a renowned female painter and one of the earliest Chinese artists to study in France in the 20th century. She became a pioneer in integrating Chinese and Western painting styles. The exhibition will allow viewers to appreciate the artistic style of Pan Yuliang and understand the artistic integration of Chinese and Western arts.

8. Go to the World

Dates: From October to November

Venue: North Hall

The exhibition will focus on award-winning exhibits from China's participation in the World Expo 100 years ago, exploring Chinese stories in the early stage of the expo. It allows visitors to explore the journey of Chinese products going global and to observe the development of Chinese corporate culture from the perspective of the World Expos.

9. African Art

Dates: From December to March 2025

Venue: Exhibition Halls 2 and 3

The exhibition will show African sculptures such as the Bambara Chiwara, Dongeon Tribal Doors, and Punu White Masks, and allow visitors to explore the unique global view where the present world intertwines with the mysterious past of ancestors and deities.

10. World Expo's Historical Literature

Dates: From November to February 2025

Venue: Exhibition Hall 1

This exhibition primarily showcases the collection of the World Expo's historical literature and printed materials gathered by the World Expo Museum over the past five years. It creates an interactive and communicative setting outside the library, bringing literature, which is usually stored on the shelves of the warehouse, to life.
