Exhibition celebrates the artistry of Dehua porcelain
As part of the 36th Shanghai Tourism Festival, the China Art Museum is hosting the Pure by Nature: The Art of Blanc de Chine exhibition.
The term "Blanc de Chine", meaning "white from China", refers to the renowned white porcelain produced in Dehua, a town in Fujian province with a rich tradition of crafting fine ceramics.
The exhibition presents over 200 pieces of exquisite white porcelain, celebrating the skill and artistry of three generations of Dehua ceramic artisans. Visitors will have the opportunity to admire outstanding works by acclaimed artists, including Chen Renhai, Lian Zihua, and Lian Deli.
Divided into three sections, the exhibition first highlights the preservation and innovation of Dehua white porcelain, showcasing classic works by contemporary masters, including vessels and figurines. The second section focuses on the Taixing shipwreck installation. This massive Chinese sailing ship, which sank in Indonesia in January 1822, carried nearly 2,000 passengers and crew, along with invaluable Chinese ceramics, most of which originated from Dehua. The final section explores contemporary, conceptual, and experimental designs, demonstrating the diverse possibilities of Dehua porcelain.
In addition to the exhibition, the China Art Museum is hosting a variety of activities, including a series of lectures on Dehua porcelain and workshops. To complement the exhibition, the museum has also introduced a special line of cultural and creative products that celebrate the unique qualities of Dehua porcelain while incorporating the museum’s distinctive style and elements of Shanghai culture.
