'Shanghai Modern' exhibition unveils city's artistic, cultural landscape
China Art Museum is holding a major exhibition titled Shanghai Modern, offering a detailed exploration of the city's modern identity and the cultural influences that have shaped its evolution.
The exhibition charts the cultural progression of Shanghai from the 20th century to the present, organized into three narrative sections. It features over 600 works spanning various media, including woodcuts, oil paintings, photography, film, and comics. Particularly noteworthy are the pieces from the inaugural Shanghai Biennial, which provide a unique insight into the city's artistic dynamism.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the museum is hosting an array of art education activities designed to enrich the visitor experience. Art workshops will allow participants to create Shanghai-themed oil paintings. Moreover, a series of special lectures and guided tours will examine how art both shapes and reflects modern urban culture, with a focus on the stylistic and thematic transformations within Shanghai's artistic landscape.
Further enhancing the cultural experience, the museum's gift shop has curated a collection of creative products. This includes a series of tin toys that pay homage to the esteemed "king of tin toys", Chen Guotai. Additionally, visitors can find fridge magnets depicting iconic Shanghai landmarks and hand crank fans adorned with Shanghai dialect motifs.
