Inspiring artists illuminate printmaking's legacy at North Bund
The 2025 International Contemporary Printmaking Exhibition, a key highlight of the Rendez-Vous at North Bund International Artist Residency Project, was launched at the China Securities Museum on Sept 9.
This exhibition brings together the creative prowess of 32 artists from across the globe, who employ engraving tools and a spectrum of colors to capture the North Bund's landscape and cultural exchange between Eastern and Western traditions.
Printmaking has historically been a vital thread in the cultural and artistic fabric of Hongkou. Its history can be traced back to 1931, when esteemed writer Lu Xun established a summer woodcut workshop in the district. His vision of "art for life" transformed printmaking from a scholarly pursuit into a powerful medium for social awakening.
A highlight of the exhibition is the contribution of nine resident artists who conducted comprehensive field research in the North Bund. Their creations pay homage to Lu Xun's pioneering spirit, symbolizing the dynamic interplay between art and urban life. Notably, Italian printmaker Patrizio Di Sciullo presents a sculpture inspired by the infinity symbol, ingeniously reflecting the confluence of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek.
Complementing these works, other invited printmakers delve into themes of regional culture and printmaking integration, offering audiences an enriched perspective on the art form's historical and cultural dimensions.
The exhibition is further enriched by eight artist studios, which will host a series of interactive printmaking experiences. Visitors are invited to engage directly with the creative process, gaining firsthand insight into both the joys and challenges of artistic endeavors.
