Shanghai welcomes Fluxus art pieces from Centre Pompidou
Shanghai is set to host China's first large-scale exhibition on Fluxus. Titled Fluxus, by Chance, the exhibition will offer an extensive exploration of this pioneering 20th-century art movement, showcasing over 200 pieces from the Centre Pompidou's collection.
Emerging in Europe and the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Fluxus challenged the limitations of traditional art forms such as expensive canvases and sculptures. Everyday items, such as storage boxes, clothes hangers, and even human silence and breathing, became new mediums for artistic expression.
Members of the Fluxus movement often came from diverse fields rather than traditional art backgrounds. These interdisciplinary creators broke professional barriers, redefining the relationship between art and life, and between art and its audience.
Visitors will encounter important works by key figures, including Marcel Duchamp, the father of conceptual art; George Maciunas, the founder of Fluxus; Joseph Beuys, a pioneer of Social Sculpture; and Yoko Ono, a trailblazer of feminist art.
The exhibition will also feature significant works by leading contemporary Chinese conceptual artists, including Geng Jianyi, Yin Xiuzhen, and Shi Yong.
