Shanghai Art & Design exhibition opens in Pudong
The 4th Shanghai Art & Design exhibition was unveiled on Jan 16 at the China Art Museum in Pudong New Area. Titled "Revealing Futures", the exhibition brings together a diverse selection of works that merge art, design, and technology.
As one of Shanghai's flagship cultural events and among the earliest national-level design exhibitions of its kind, the Shanghai Art & Design exhibition has served as an important platform for creative talents from across China and around the world since 2011, fostering urban innovation and dialogue. Previous editions were held in 2011, 2013, and 2016. This fourth installment marks a notable return after a decade-long hiatus.
This year's open call received more than 1,300 submissions, from which 426 works or series were selected through multiple rounds of review. The exhibited pieces are organized into two main sections and presented across seven thematic categories: art, clothing, food, living, mobility, entertainment, and an international invitational section, comprising a total of 339 groupings.
Exhibition highlights
- Many works draw inspiration from China's rich cultural heritage and Shanghai's distinctive local identity, showcasing a creative style that reflects both Chinese character and Shanghai flair.
- The exhibition also focuses on urban renewal, public services, and everyday life, emphasizing how design can tangibly improve people's quality of life.
- Cutting-edge themes such as new-energy vehicles, humanoid robots, and sustainable design are creatively interpreted, alongside culturally inspired everyday products that express contemporary Chinese aesthetics.
- Through exhibitions, industry networking, and professional exchanges, the event promotes the practical application of design, supporting key sectors including integrated circuits, biomedicine, and artificial intelligence, and demonstrating design's role in driving economic value.
During the exhibition period, the organizers will offer a variety of public programs, including workshops, talks, guided tours, and panel discussions featuring curators, designers, and participating artists.
