Shanghai's Jiushi Art Museum opened its first exhibition, Before the Earth Falls Down, at its new address on April 1. The museum now calls the historic McBain Building, also known as the Asia Building, at No 1 the Bund home.

Formerly the Bund One Art Museum, the space has previously hosted Claude Monet's Impression Sunrise, Titian's Flora, as well as pieces by Botticelli and contemporaries.

Originally constructed in 1916, the McBain Building is one of the landmark examples of New Classical architecture on Shanghai's waterfront. Jiushi museum's relocation to the building is part of an effort to revitalize historical structures in the area.

"In renovating the second and third floors, we preserved the original arched windows to create a dialogue between the artworks inside and the Bund landscape outside," said Tang Mingze, project manager of the museum.

The museum is part of a broader cultural network that includes the Bund 18 Jiushi Art Gallery and the Jiushi Art Salon at No 230 East Beijing Road.

"We aim to promote diversified artistic integration and activation of these heritage buildings, enriching public experiences in this iconic Shanghai district," Tang added.

Running through June 28, Before the Earth Falls Down is curated by Jiang Jiehong. It features nine contemporary artists from China and abroad, whose works — spanning installations, paintings, video and sound — interrogate the rapid loss of biodiversity and the pressing realities of global environmental crises.
