Shanghai Art Collection Museum is presenting A Universe in Miniature: The Art of Brushstrokes in Miniature Painting & Gongbi Painting, on view through May 22.

The exhibition is supported by the Embassy of Turkmenistan in China, the Consulate General of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Shanghai, and the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkiye in Shanghai.

On display are more than 100 exquisite works of miniature painting and gongbi (meticulous brushwork) painting by renowned artists from China, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkiye, and other countries and regions. For the first time, the National Museum of Oriental Miniature Art in Uzbekistan, named after Kamoliddin Behzod and the only museum in the world dedicated to miniature painting, has contributed pieces from its prized collection, adding a distinctive dimension to the exhibition.

The gongbi works are equally remarkable. Highlights include pieces by Chen Peiqiu, a master of Chinese painting, and internationally acclaimed artists such as Song Hua. The exhibition also features works from three generations of the Chen family, along with pieces by emerging artists, reflecting the rich and dynamic landscape of contemporary Chinese gongbi painting.

Organized into three sections, the exhibition provides a comprehensive look at the refined beauty and distinctive qualities of both artistic traditions, from brushwork and color to narrative expression.
