The Hai Museum of Art Shanghai is presenting German Art Today: Contemporary Art from Germany. The exhibition features more than 160 works by German artists, including paintings, sculptures, photography, and installation art, offering a comprehensive view of the diversity and artistic achievement of Germany's contemporary art scene.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the friendship-city relationship between Shanghai and Hamburg. It is also a significant year for deepening the China-Germany comprehensive partnership and strengthening people-to-people exchanges. Against this backdrop, the exhibition is not only an artistic showcase but also an important cultural initiative that celebrates the friendship between the two cities and supports broader Sino-German cultural dialogue.
German contemporary art holds a unique and influential position in world art history. This exhibition brings together 23 influential contemporary German artists, representing key movements such as neo-expressionism, abstract composition, and conceptual photography.
The works on display are marked by bold experimentation in form and language, balancing artistic autonomy with a keen awareness of social reality. Visitors can explore Dirk Salz's abstract spaces built from paint and resin on multi-layer panels, Herbert Mehler's refined steel sculptures defined by precision and poetic restraint, and Nikola Dimitrov's rhythmic compositions of color on canvas.
