A major exhibition of Qianlong-period artifacts (1736-1796) will open on May 18, International Museum Day, at Fengxian Museum. Titled Splendors in Flowing Light: Special Exhibition of Qianlong Period Artifacts from The Palace Museum Collection, the show marks the museum's second collaboration with the Palace Museum and stands as the largest and most comprehensive Qianlong-themed exhibition in Shanghai in recent years.

The exhibition presents 121 pieces and sets from the Palace Museum's collection, including gold and silverware, porcelain, jade, writing implements, textiles, and arms and armor.

Qianlong, the sixth emperor of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and one of China's longest-reigning rulers, was a devoted art enthusiast. The exhibition will feature imperial seals and ceremonial robes used by Qianlong during his six-decade reign, paired vases and tri-color glass bottles whose production he personally oversaw, as well as antiquities, paintings, calligraphy, and Western clocks from his private collection.

These treasures provide a window into why Qianlong is celebrated as one of ancient China's most dedicated collectors.

A range of activities will also take place alongside the exhibition, including:

  • Immersive role-playing experience: Visitors can step into the emperor's shoes by completing tasks such as morning reading, holding court, appreciating art in the royal study, and composing poetry. A recreated Sanxitang (Hall of Three Rarities) provides a backdrop for photos, and participants can collect stamps of the emperor's own seal designs.
  • In-depth workshops: Hands-on sessions include artifact restoration, painting imperial patterns, calligraphy, and traditional crafts. These workshops are ideal for those wishing to explore the art and history of the Qianlong era more deeply.
