More than 300 species of American plants, including rare agave, are being put on display for 16-months in Shanghai as part of the On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas exhibition.

"Realm of the world tree: agave and its friends — plants of the Americas show" will open on July 9 at Shanghai greenhouse garden in the World Expo Culture Park, running through Nov 14, 2027. The timing coincides with the agave's flowering phenomenon.

The 22,000-square-meter greenhouse complex dedicates each pavilion to a major ancient civilization through climate-specific plant displays.

Pavilion one simulates the arid highlands of Aztec civilization, featuring an Olmec colossal head entrance and five deity totem poles among cactus forests. The centerpiece presents over 30 rare agave varieties, with immersive ancient distillery scenes tracing the plant's cultural evolution from sacred grass to Mexico's national spirit.

Pavilion two recreates the tropical rain forest of Maya civilization around a world tree installation with suspended Maya script artworks. Visitors can navigate paths dotted with divine sculptures and explore underwater treasure scenes.

Pavilion three presents Inca civilization through misty canyon landscapes, featuring llama sculptures in traditional textiles, a floating Machu Picchu installation, Nazca line totems, and sacred Inca plants alongside golden chambers and rope bridges.

Beyond traditional displays, the exhibition emphasizes experiential engagement through sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. Cultural performances will take place throughout the pavilions, with costumed actors portraying Maya priests, musicians and tribal warriors.

Themed markets in greenhouse corridors will feature American cuisine and chili culture tied to seasonal festivals. Visitors can taste agave spirits and purchase specialty beverages alongside themed merchandise, including collectibles and plant-related products.

The exhibit is part of a world tree journey project at city institutions including Shanghai Museum, Shanghai zoo and Chenshan botanical garden, enabling visitors to explore American civilizations from multiple perspectives.
