Explore cat-themed exhibitions and experiences across Shanghai

This summer, Shanghai is offering a variety of cat-themed exhibitions and experiences.

Whether you're interested in learning about feline history, enjoying cat-inspired art, or meeting rescue cats, here are four recommended spots to check out.

1. Miaoum

Located in Station X at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, Miaoum is an immersive cat-themed space that blends exhibitions, natural science education, and theatrical performances across nearly 2,000 square meters.

The venue includes six themed exhibition halls that explore the history of cats, from their ancient origins to their roles as modern city pets. It also offers child-friendly interactive science installations and a cat cafe.

Starting July 8, visitors can reserve in advance to bring their cats to the exhibition.

2. Meow, Cats! @ The British Library

Shanghai Library East is hosting Meow, Cats! @ The British Library, featuring reproductions of rare documents, manuscripts, and illustrations from the British Library's collections that trace the journey of cats alongside human civilization.

The exhibition examines the diverse roles of cats throughout history and across different cultures, from their sacred importance in ancient Egypt to being cherished companions in the Ottoman Empire.

It also highlights cats' presence in literature and art, featuring stories about famous cat lovers such as Honore de Balzac, Ernest Hemingway, and Isaac Newton, as well as works by masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Frederic Chopin.

3. My Fluffy Me: A Healing Art Exhibition Featuring Adorable Pets

This exhibition centers on cats, dogs, and other adorable pets, bringing together nearly 100 works by six artists from different countries. The collection features creative reimaginings of classic paintings, childlike illustrations, and delicate pet sculptures.

In addition to artworks, the exhibition features large-scale plush installations, interactive light-and-shadow areas and photo spots.

4. Cat Island

Inside Shengzhai Park in Baoshan district, Cat Island is a cat rescue and education site converted from a former kindergarten.

It is Shanghai's first science education base for community-based stray cat management, combining shelter care, public education, adoption services, and volunteer activities. The sanctuary is home to more than 400 cats, which can be seen roaming the grounds and around the wooden cottages.

A second phase has also opened, covering about 2 hectares. Surrounded by water, it features a cat library where visitors can read while cats are nearby. Unlike the first phase, the second phase is not open to walk-in visitors and requires advance registration for guided educational programs.

Where: Inside Shengzhai Park, No 62 Shengzhai village, Gucun town, Baoshan district

Open:

  • Phase I: Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm; weekends, 10 am to 5 pm. Closed on Mondays. Free admission after on-site registration; no advance reservation is required.
  • Phase II: Open on weekends only. Advance registration for guided educational programs is required through the Rednote account "Xiao Ju Deng" (小桔灯) by following the account and sending a private message.
