The Powerlong Museum in Minhang district is currently hosting an exhibition of Swiss artist Andre Evard, marking his first solo museum exhibition in China. The exhibition features over 100 original works from a German private collection.

Born in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, in 1876, Evard lived through two world wars. He largely remained outside the mainstream art scene of his era despite being a contemporary of renowned artists like Pablo Picasso and Giorgio Morandi. He is recognized as one of the early pioneers of Swiss concrete-constructive art.

Evard's artistic journey began with a focus on nature-inspired forms, which gradually evolved into a pursuit of geometric abstraction. He studied under Charles L'Eplattenier and was a classmate of Le Corbusier. Their collaboration on the Villa Fallet project is notable, as Evard transformed botanical elements into intricate geometric patterns.

The exhibition follows this artistic evolution in four sections: Art Nouveau, landscape, still life, and abstract art. Visitors can trace how Evard's early fascination with natural forms gradually transformed into a focus on lines, shapes, and geometric compositions.

The works come from a German collector who has dedicated 50 years to building a collection of more than 1,000 works by Evard. The exhibition is the result of two years of collaboration between the collector and Powerlong Museum, offering a rare and comprehensive glimpse into this lesser-known chapter of Swiss modern art in Shanghai.
