Shanghai Library, also known as the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of Shanghai, serves multiple roles and provides various services.

By the end of 2021, Shanghai Library had over 57 million items in Chinese and other languages, including rare books, manuscripts, genealogical records, rare Western books, sheet music, newspapers and patents. It covers an area of 127,000 square metres.
The library provides free reading and book-loan services to the public, and organises various reading activities. It also offers online reference services, lectures, exhibitions and remote information access.
Shanghai Library supports scientific research and innovation. It excels at technological research, patent analysis, science and technology evaluation and competitive intelligence. It operates information service platforms for industrial development and SMEs.
It has embraced new technologies and developed innovative reading experiences and other informational services. It promotes interlibrary sharing and collaborates with overseas libraries.
The Shanghai Library publishes indexes, yearbooks, journals and news releases to provide readers with high-quality scientific and cultural knowledge.
