Five spots to appreciate Maillard-style architecture in Shanghai

In contrast to the colourful "dopamine" trend of the summer, the Maillard palette, which employs a set of deep earth tones, takes centre stage this year.

If you’re keen to capture Maillard-style photos, then Shanghai is the spot for a city walk since there is a collection of architectural structures featuring the Maillard palette.

The Wukang Building

The Wukang Building, designed by Laszlo Hudec and completed in 1924, is a protected historic residential building located in the western part of the former French Concession. The eight-storey building is designed in the style of the French Renaissance and is the oldest veranda-style apartment building in Shanghai.

It is a great building to visit and take photos from various angles. There are also various shops along the street to read books and enjoy tea or coffee.

Zhang Yuan

Zhang Yuan, or Zhang's Garden, earned its name after Wuxi business tycoon Zhang Shuhe, also known as Chang Su-ho, who bought the property and opened it to the public in 1885 as China's first modern leisure garden. After a round of restorations, the western section has been reincarnated as a site of fashion, culture and commerce.

Sinan Mansion

Sinan Mansion is not just a building, but a compound of 51 garden villas. It brings together eight different styles of the city's modern historical architecture, making it a "living museum of modern residential buildings in Shanghai".

No 8 Hengshan Road

Hengshan Road is famous for its diverse architectural styles, ranging from colonial mansions to classical Chinese courtyard houses.

Red bricks, white stone eaves and pointed tower roofs can be seen at No 8 Hengshan Road, making it an internet-famous site.

Guangfulin Relics Park

When it comes to the best places to visit in Shanghai in autumn, Guangfulin Relic Site Culture Park, with a history of thousands of years, is on the must-visit list.

At the park, you can "travel through time and space", experiencing architectural styles spanning from the Neolithic Age to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
