Shanghai unveiled its inaugural batch of cultural heritage-themed tour routes on June 7, showcasing the city's rich historical and cultural treasures.

The Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism unveiled the tour routes at the Qingpu District Museum, which was the main venue for the city's 2024 Cultural and Natural Heritage Day celebrations.

These routes highlight Shanghai's heritage, including architectural landmarks and intangible cultural experiences, allowing residents and visitors to explore the city's origins.

The routes are:

1. Unearthing the Roots

With a history spanning 6,000 years, Shanghai has transformed into a modern international metropolis through the confluence of cultures.

Route: Shanghai Songze Ruins Museum → Qingpu Museum → Zhujiajiao Ancient Town → Fuquan Mountain Site → Qinglongzhen Site

2. Spring's Charm  

Ideal for spring and summer, this tour winds through classical gardens that are lush with greenery and perfect for strolling.

Route: Jiading Confucius Temple → Guyi Garden → Zuibaichi Park → Fangta Garden

3. The City's Origin

Explore Shanghai's urban origins, savoring its past while decoding its developmental stories.  Wander through the old city quarters to unearth the local allure. 

Route: Yu Garden → Shanghai Concert Hall (Former Nanking Theater) → Shanghai Great World Amusement Park (大世界游乐场) → Shanghai Stadium → Park Hotel → Shanghai History Museum → Zhang Garden

4. Revolutionary Reminiscences

Retrace the revolutionary footsteps at Shanghai's iconic sites, immersing in the profound evolution of China's red culture.

Route: Memorial Hall of the First CPC National Congress → Residence of General - Zhou Enlai → Sun Yat-sen's Former Residence → The Former Site of the Central Organ of the Chinese Socialist Youth League → Memorial Hall of the Second CPC National Congress → Mao Zedong's Former Residence

5. A Centennial Education

Campus grounds tempered by a century of history still brim with vitality, nurturing generations of students. This route beckons both young and old to relive school memories.

Route: Historical Architectural Complex of East China University of Political Science and Law (Former St. John's University of Modern Architecture) → Shanghai Children's Palace in Changning district (Wang Boqun's Former Residence) → Yuyuan Road Historic Area → Qian Xuesen's Former Residence → Shanghai Writers' Association Office Building → China Welfare Institute Children's Palace

6. Industrial Renaissance  

Once industrial powerhouses, these industrial sites now pulse with renewed vigor. Factories built along the river have been transformed into trendy sites.

Route: Former Farnham & Co., S. C. Site → The North Bund → Former Site of the Huangpu Wharf → Maoma Warehouses → Yangshupu Waterworks → Shanghai Fish Market → Green Hill

7. Rivers Intertwined

The Suzhou Creek and Huangpu River carry Shanghai's cultural currents. Appreciate the city's charm along its iconic waterfronts. 

Route: Oriental Pearl TV Tower → The RockBund → The Bund Architectural Complex → Garden Bridge of Shanghai → Broadway Mansions Hotel → Shanghai General Post Office Building → Riverbank Mansion (河滨大楼) → Former Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce Building

8. Reborn Industrial Vigor

As time continues to flow, industrial heritage sites are reborn, empowered with new life. This tour allows you to explore Shanghai's urban development and feel the weight of its industrial legacy.

Route: Shanghai Yuan Dynasty Water Gate Museum → Shanghai Mint Museum → 1000 Trees → M50 Creative Park → Shanghai Textile Museum → M+Marie's Creative Park → Tonglefang

Towering sycamore trees provide ample shade for people who enjoy long walks or bicycle rides. Along this path, storied buildings will guide your exploration of the city's past.

Route: Early Architecture of Shanghai Jiao Tong University → Wukang Mansion → Soong Ching-ling's Former Residence → Ke Ling's Former Residence → Zhang Leping's Former Residence → Blackstone Apartments → Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall → Shanghai Museum of Arts and Crafts

10. Architectural Rebirth

The fusion of historic and modern structures has birthed new cityscapes and lifestyles in Shanghai. This route is an ideal way to explore Shanghai's history and development.

Route: Shanghai University of Sport → Green Building (绿瓦大楼) (Former Shanghai Municipal Government Building) → Yangpu District Library (Former Shanghai Library) → Shanghai Waterworks Science & Technology Museum → 1933 Shanghai → Shanghai Municipal Council Building → Shanghai Exhibition Center → Columbia Circle
