Discover Shanghai's hidden gems: Six new leisure blocks unveiled
A new list of Shanghai's municipal-level tourism and leisure blocks has been unveiled, featuring a total of six distinctive areas.
1. Daxue Road Block

Located in Yangpu district, the Daxue Road Block connects Jiangwan Stadium and Fudan University. With a youthful and trendy atmosphere, its 700-meter main road links nearby universities, communities, and tech parks. The block emphasizes the first-store economy and trendy consumption, hosting over 300 cultural and creative events and weekend markets annually to attract young consumers. Read more about Daxue Road.
2. Moganshan Road Specialty Block

Situated in the southeast of Putuo district, the Moganshan Road Specialty Block spans an area of approximately 100,000 square meters (10 hectares). Bordered by Suzhou Creek to the northeast, Moganshan Road to the south, and Changhua Road to the west, it offers sightseeing, intangible cultural heritage crafts, and specialty cuisine. The block is known for waterfront events including the "Suzhou Creek Half Marathon" cultural tourism festival, providing a unique tourism experience.
3. Lake Malaren Block

Located in Luodian town, Baoshan district, this block covers an area of about 110,000 sq m and includes Meilan Lake, the second largest man-made lake in the city. Designed by Sweden's Sweco Group, the block integrates diverse services such as dining, sports, pet interaction, and retail. It also includes a children's literature museum and renowned bookstores, creating open spaces for ecological tours and cultural education.
4. Nanxiang Shuangta Tourism and Leisure Block

Located in Nanxiang town, Jiading district, this block spans an area of approximately 140,000 sq m. As the birthplace of Nanxiang's historical culture, it houses significant cultural relics such as the Yunxiang Temple of the Liang Dynasty (502-557) and the Tanyuan Garden of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The block blends history with modernity, hosting cultural events like the Nanxiang Xiaolongbao Culture Exhibition.
5. Zhouqiao Old Street Tourism and Leisure Block

Situated in Jiading district, this block covers an area of about 60,000 sq m. It preserves the historic layout of the district, featuring architectural styles from various dynasties. The block focuses on elements of traditional Chinese culture such as tea and qipao. It transforms local mansions and classic residences to create a distinctive tea culture street, offering visitors a unique local experience.
6. Xiyunlou Cultural and Leisure Block

Located in Malu town, Jiading district, this block spans an area of approximately 60,000 sq m and features eight historical and cultural sites. It combines green landscape belts and creatively designed lawns to form a riverside promenade. The block's retro decor complements Art Deco buildings and showcases Shanghai's local Haipai culture. It hosts many Haipai-themed cultural events each year.
