Discover art museums in unexpected settings
From tranquil rice fields to repurposed industrial oil tanks, Shanghai is home to a collection of distinctive art museums tucked away in unexpected settings. Some lie quietly amid rural landscapes, while others emerge from the city's industrial past. Each has its own character and offers visitors a chance to experience art beyond the conventional gallery space.
🌾 Art museums in the rice fields
Jiayuanhai Art Museum
Rising amid waves of rice, Jiayuanhai Art Museum is one of Shanghai's rare rural art landmarks. Its white walls and concrete surfaces overlook the fields, bringing art beyond the conventional gallery and into the open countryside. Visitors can wander through exhibitions while listening to the soft rustle of rice and breathing in the earthy fragrance of the fields. It offers a sense of calm and poetic inspiration.
Does the Flower Hear the Bee? is currently on view as part of the 15th Shanghai Biennale. The exhibition explores the connection between nature and life through installations, video art, and ceramics, inviting visitors to reflect on humanity's relationship with the natural world.

Ke Art Museum
Tucked away in the Liantang Ancient Town in Qingpu district, Ke Art Museum captures the essence of the traditional water town style with its white walls and dark tiles. Surrounded by winding rivers, patchwork farmlands, fragrant orchards, and stretches of forest, the museum sits quietly within the rural landscape.
As Shanghai's first nonprofit rural art museum, it organizes pastoral art seasons and site-specific art projects throughout the year. It is a peaceful retreat for city dwellers looking to escape the noise and immerse themselves in creativity.

🌊 Art space by the lake
Tai Art Gallery
Tai Art Gallery was once a landmark boat dock on the shore of Yuanxiang Lake. Today, the circular structure rests quietly on the water, its gray bricks, tiled roof, and latticed windows reflected in gentle ripples below. A winding path leads visitors through greenery along the shore, where mist rises from the water, and a soft breeze brushes past.
With the lake as a mirror and natural light streaming through the windows, the gallery merges the picturesque scenery with a dance of light and shadow. Walking through the space feels like stepping into a living ink painting — quiet, unhurried, and deeply atmospheric.
If you go: Building 9, No 2755 Huyi Highway, Jiading district

🌳 Art museum in the trees
Jiudianshui Art Museum
Hidden in a green space near the intersection of Guilin Road and Yishan Road, the museum is surrounded by office towers and residential communities.
Six camphor trees grow right through the walls of the building, their branches reaching skyward alongside four "floating boxes" that seem to hover among the leaves. Sunlight filters through the foliage, scattering dappled shadows on the corrugated aluminum walls. Mirrored bases create the illusion that the structure drifts lightly among the trees.
Inside, sunlight pours through the transparent ceiling, filling the space with warmth and brightness. The museum does not draw the trees indoors. Instead, it gently shapes itself around trees that have been growing there for decades.
If you go: No 406 Guilin Road, Xuhui district
Open: Daily, 10 am – 7:30 pm
🛢️ Art museum in former oil tanks
Tank Shanghai
Tank Shanghai is located on the site of a former aviation fuel tank facility by the Huangpu River. The museum's distinctive industrial architecture creates a striking landscape where visitors can see passing ships.
The surrounding gardens are thoughtfully designed, with seasonal flowers blooming throughout the year. Their soft and ever-changing colors form a gentle contrast to the bold, hard lines of the industrial tanks, adding a touch of natural grace to the art complex.
If you go: No 2380 Longteng Avenue, Xuhui district
Open: Tuesday to Friday, noon – 6 pm; weekends, 10 am – 6 pm
🏞️ Art museum in the park
Meibo Art Museum
Nestled within the scenic Li'an Park, Meibo Art Museum is surrounded by lush greenery that shifts with the seasons. It has earned the nickname "the art museum blooming in the park". The building blends modern simplicity with natural textures, while floor-to-ceiling glass walls draw the park's greenery into the interior and create an immersive ecological setting.
With the Dianpu River and the landscapes of Li'an Park all around, the museum links art appreciation with moments of quiet retreat in nature. It has become a cultural landmark in Shanghai where artistic depth meets everyday relaxation.
