'Spirited Away' stage play to land in Shanghai

The stage adaptation of Hayao Miyazaki's animated fantasy film Spirited Away is set to land in Shanghai from July 14 to Aug 3. Tickets for the show will be available for purchase starting on Feb 20.

Spirited Away is a classic Miyazaki film which holds a special place in the world of animated movies. The movie was the highest-grossing film in Japanese history when it came out, and it won prestigious awards such as the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Academy Award for best animated feature. The captivating adventures of the characters in the play have left a lasting impression on many, establishing it as a must-see for millions of fans.

Since its premiere in Tokyo in 2022, the stage adaptation has enjoyed immense success. The production has toured Japan twice and graced the stage in London's West End in 2024, becoming the largest scale overseas performance of a Japanese play in history. The London trip comprised 135 shows and drew in approximately 300,000 spectators.

The stage production of Spirited Away will be the largest-scale Japanese-language performance in China to date.

Ticket information

  • Ticket sales will commence on Feb 20 at 10 am for Shanghai Culture Square members and Damai members, and at 11 am for the public.
  • Ticketing platforms include Shanghai Culture Square, Damai, Maoyan, Piaoxingqiu, the "live life" WeChat mini program of Shanghai Media Group, and Ctrip.

  • The first round of ticket offerings is for shows from July 14 to July 20, featuring nine show times and ticket prices ranging from 180 to 1180 yuan ($24.75-$162.26).
