Richard Wagner's masterpiece to make Shanghai debut
The Bayreuth Festival, one of Europe's most prestigious summer arts festivals, will make its debut in Shanghai this year, establishing the only residency project in Asia — Bayreuth in Shanghai, a three-year opera initiative.
The music brand was founded by the renowned German composer Richard Wagner in 1876.
From July 4 to 6, as the first production under the Bayreuth in Shanghai project, Wagner's masterpiece Tristan und Isolde, based on the version performed at the Bayreuth Festival 2022, will be staged at the Shanghai Grand Theatre.
Wagner's connection to Shanghai is longstanding. In 1999, his opera Der fliegende Hollander, or The Flying Dutchman, was performed in its entirety for the first time in the Chinese mainland at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. Over the past two decades, this venue has hosted numerous classic Wagner productions.
This rendition of Tristan und Isolde will mark the latest version's debut on an Asian stage. The cast features internationally acclaimed singers who are prominent figures in the global Wagner opera scene. Additionally, principal musicians from renowned ensembles like the Orchestre de Paris and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig will join forces with the Shanghai Opera House symphony orchestra.
