Michael Kohlhaas

Originally written by Heinrich von Kleist in the 19th century, Michael Kohlhaas is set in 16th-century Germany, a landscape of fragmented states and complex power struggles.

Director Simon McBurney, in collaboration with Schaubuhne Berlin, brings this classic tale to life through minimalist stagecraft and bold theatrical experimentation. Audiences will find themselves at a moral crossroads, journeying with the principled horse trader Kohlhaas as he navigates a world of confusion and anger.

Tangent

Renowned Japanese media art innovator Shiro Takatani, in conjunction with the avant-garde group Dumb Type, brings the dance drama Tangent to life.

Following acclaimed performances in Kyoto and Venice, this exclusive China premiere in Shanghai will dazzle with cutting-edge multimedia sound and light technology. A pendulum audio feedback system captures and amplifies every nuanced sound from the performers, including footsteps, friction, and breathing. LED screens serve as a canvas for arcs of light, blending the performers' physical presence with their digital shadows in a visual exploration of existence and boundaries.

The album 12 by Ryuichi Sakamoto provides the sonic backbone, harmonizing with the pendulum's echoes, the dancers' breaths, and the arcs' flickers, crafting an auditory and visual feast.

Evening

Evening is based on Belarusian playwright Aleksey Dudarev's celebrated work from the 1980s. The production, to be presented at Theatre Young, is adapted by the esteemed Republican Theatre of Belarusian Drama.

The narrative portrays the poignant lives of three elderly men living in solitude, their children gone, leaving only the sky, earth, and an old radio. Far from fictional silhouettes, these characters are war survivors. Their arguments, banter, memories, and sighs, though seemingly trivial, reveal the profound transformations of a nation, akin to the waning light of dusk.
