Shanghai Chinese Orchestra to celebrate Spring Festival with auspicious performance
The Shanghai Chinese Orchestra will perform the concert Joyful Welcome to the God of Wealth at Theatre Young on Feb 21, opening the new year with a vibrant repertoire of Shanghai-style folk music that blends tradition and innovation.
Feb 21 falls on the fifth day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar, an auspicious occasion devoted to welcoming the God of Wealth. Customs such as setting off firecrackers and sweeping the home embody hopes for prosperity and abundance in the coming year.
The concert will showcase a selection of classic and cross-over works performed on traditional instruments, including the suona, a piercing double-reed woodwind, and the pipa, a four-stringed lute. Alongside festive favorites such as Spring Festival Overture and Gong Xi Fa Cai, the program also includes well-known works such as Rhapsody in Blue.
