'The Great Comet' prepares to dazzle Shanghai
Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 is coming to Shanghai Grand Theatre in May, with tickets now on sale. Performers from London's West End, Broadway, and China's leading musical theatre talent will converge on the Shanghai stage for what promises to be an unforgettable production.
The musical, with music and lyrics by Dave Malloy, draws inspiration from a section of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace (Volume 2, Part 5). Directed by Rachel Chavkin, it premiered Off-Broadway in 2012 and received the Richard Rodgers Awards the following year.
The 2024 Shanghai stage concert is a co-production between the original creative team and Shanghai Grand Theatre. Performed entirely in English and enhanced by VR modeling technology, the production traces the emotional entanglements of Natasha, Pierre, and Anatole with striking immediacy.
Presented in a sung-through format, the score fuses Russian folk traditions with electronic dance rhythms and classical operatic textures. The staging departs from the conventional proscenium arch, transforming both auditorium and performance space into a 360-degree immersive experience, with audience interaction woven into the experience.
