Hong Kong arts program brings a rich lineup to Theatre Young
The Hong Kong Arts Unlimited program opened at Theatre Young in Yangpu district on May 14, bringing four Hong Kong-based arts groups to Shanghai for a diverse lineup of performances.
Launched by Theatre Young in 2025, Hong Kong Arts Unlimited is designed to introduce Hong Kong arts and culture to Shanghai by showcasing the city's leading artists and creative companies.
This year's program features four distinctive productions.
The Emperor, his Mom, a Eunuch, and a Man, presented by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, is directed by Roy Szeto, who has won Best Director at the Hong Kong Drama Awards multiple times. Set in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) court, the play explores the complexities of human nature and the many facets of society through the story of palace figures.
Draft My Life, presented by We Draman Group, is making its Shanghai premiere. The musical follows three female night-shift employees at a furniture shop as they step beyond their comfort zones, leave home, and gradually come to understand themselves while searching for where they truly belong.
Village Echoes: Listening to Hong Kong's Village School Anthems, performed by Fragrant Village, is being staged outside Hong Kong for the first time. The concert weaves together village school anthems, farm work songs, evening songs from fishing villages, and festive temple gongs and drums to create a sound map of Hong Kong's simple everyday life.
The program concludes with ELDT on Screen, featuring five selected stage productions: Design for Living, Grand Expectations, The Doppelganger, Art School Musical, and The Visit: Art School Musical 2.0. These films will be screened in Shanghai for the first time.
