Video Phase brings interactive concert to Shanghai this July
A Canadian musician-creative duo, Video Phase, will stage Lumens at Theatre Young in July, transforming the theater into a live music video game.
In the performance, two musicians become players navigating a series of musical levels. As they unlock different modules — drums, melody, bass, and harmony — the production evolves into an immersive multimedia concert experience.
Three-dimensional, multi-screen visuals envelop the audience, creating a space suspended between the virtual and the real. Music and visuals are generated live and feed off one another in real time: sound shapes the imagery, while the imagery responds to the sound. Everything seen and heard forms part of a game feedback loop unfolding in the moment.
Lumens blends electronic music, percussion, and original digital instruments. Launchpads, laser frames, motion-capture systems, and even water function as elements of the game interface. The result is not merely a multimedia performance but an interactive game session experienced firsthand by the audience.
The work premiered in Montreal in 2017 and has since traveled to cities across the United States and Asia. Each performance generates a new version of the game.
In 2018, Lumens received the Opus Prize for electroacoustic concert of the year from the Conseil Quebecois de la Musique.
