As part of the Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels initiative, Dance, a work by United States choreographer Lucinda Childs, will be performed by the Lyon Opera Ballet at the Shangyin Opera House in October.

Childs is a leading figure in postmodern dance and one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century. She received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2017 Venice Biennale.

Created in 1979, Dance is a collaboration between Childs, US minimalist composer Philip Glass, and US conceptual artist Sol LeWitt. True to its title, the work strips dance down to its purest essence: performers walk, step, leap, and spin in repeated patterns that continuously expand the possibilities of movement.

Glass composed a highly melodic score, while LeWitt created a visual space with crisp geometric lines and color blocks. Together, they created a multi-layered stage work that has become a minimalist landmark.

Since its premiere in 1979, Dance has continued to be performed on stages around the world. In 2016, the Lyon Opera Ballet, one of Europe's most distinguished ballet companies, produced a new film version of the work under Childs' supervision, marking a new chapter in the classic's history.
