Intangible Cultural Heritage of Shanghai: Guqin-making Technique

The guqin is China's earliest stringed instrument. The fine-tuned, handmade guqin produces a deep, mellow sound and demands intricate craftsmanship, which generally takes two to five years to create by hand and involves nearly 100 steps.

In 2003, the guqin and its music were recognized as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
