Shanghai wraps up green home appliances subsidy program
Shanghai's green home appliances subsidy program, launched in September, is set to conclude on Dec 31 — a deadline that is stimulating a last-minute buying frenzy.
As the deadline approaches, retailers across the city are rolling out tempting year-end promotions that are designed to really get the shoppers going.
Since its launch, the program is said to have achieved remarkable success, with participating businesses reporting sales growth topping 20 percent.
Popular items include air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines — while dryers, steam ovens and printers have also been in high demand — boosted by municipal subsidies.
In the home improvements sector, flooring and smart toilets have been particularly well received, along with mattresses and sofas in the furniture category. Additionally, seniors-friendly products — such as nursing beds, assistive recliners, hearing aids and electric wheelchairs — have gained significant traction.
Han Jianhua, secretary general of the Shanghai Commercial Trade Association of Household Electric and Electronic Appliances, described the initiative as the most impactful consumer incentive in recent years.
"The trade-in programs implemented nationwide and in Shanghai have significantly boosted consumption," Han said.
According to the association, over 3.57 million participants had joined the trade-in program as of Dec 11. Sales of subsidized appliances, such as air conditioners and computers, have surged by 30-40 percent year-on-year.
To date, about 1.17 billion yuan ($160.07 million) in subsidies have been distributed, driving appliance and home product sales to exceed 10 billion yuan collectively.
