Shanghai Summer opens with upgraded services for inbound travelers
The 2026 Shanghai Summer International Consumption Season opened on July 3 and will run through October, covering the summer travel period as well as the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays.
Now in its third year, the season will introduce new consumption scenarios and upgraded services for inbound travelers, with activities spanning shopping, tourism, culture, sports, and entertainment.
Major events include the 2026 Rolex Shanghai Masters, an ATP 1000 tournament, and the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship (MXGP) Shanghai. The wider program is organized around six themed sections: sports, urban exploration, museums, music, entertainment and relaxation.
For inbound visitors, the focus is on making travel, shopping, and payments easier.
HiChina, the all-in-one travel app for international visitors to China, will optimize its services for visitors during their stay in Shanghai. Navigation app Amap will integrate Shanghai's distinctive shopping destinations into travel itineraries.
Easy Go, a digital platform jointly launched by the municipal government and Alipay last year, will be upgraded with artificial intelligence. The upgraded platform will better understand user commands in multiple languages and provide smart digital services such as ride-hailing, ticket booking, and translation.
Payment services will also be expanded. Visa will extend inbound payment coverage to more small and micro merchants, making both tap and scan payments more accessible.
A mobile platform for departure tax refunds will be introduced, allowing inbound travelers to handle tax refund shopping invoices, instant refunds upon purchases, customs verification, and port tax refunds on their phones.
Shanghai Pass, a multi-purpose prepaid card for inbound travelers launched last year, has introduced a QR code service this year covering 150 art galleries and museums across the city.
In addition to using Shanghai Pass for public transportation in Shanghai, travelers can use it for public transportation services in more than 300 cities across the country.
