Cultural markets, exhibitions, performances, and food festivals highlighting Latin America, France, Italy, Kazakhstan, Southeast Asia, and South Korea are taking place across Shanghai this summer.

Together, they offer visitors a chance to explore different cultures without leaving the city.

 

Latin America

Realm of the World Tree: Twin Hills Market

• When: Through Nov 14, Saturdays and Sundays, 3:30 pm to 9:30 pm
• Where: No 255 Tongyao Road, Pudong New Area

Held near Twin Hills in Shanghai Expo Culture Park, this weekend market is part of a wider program linked to Realm of the World Tree: Agave and its Friends — Plants of the Americas Show at Shanghai Greenhouse Garden. The plant exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Shanghai Museum exhibition On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas.

Visitors can enjoy food, entertainment, and themed products in an experience inspired by the nature and cultures of Latin America.

 

Brazilian Polyphony

• When: Through Aug 25, Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm
• Where: Gallery 101, No 370 Beisuzhou Road, Hongkou district

Presented by 101 Plus in partnership with Brazilian design brand ETEL, the exhibition marks ETEL's first major showcase since entering the Chinese market. It explores modern Brazilian design through works by prominent figures such as Jorge Zalszupin, Lina Bo Bardi, Oscar Niemeyer, Percival Lafer, and Sergio Rodrigues. Some works are also available for purchase.

ETEL is known for its commitment to researching, reproducing, and promoting modern and contemporary Brazilian design.

 

France

Je t'aime South of France Wedding Market

• When: Aug 14 to 16, 4 pm to 9 pm
• Where: EKA Tianwu, No 535 Jinqiao Road, Pudong New Area

This weekend market at EKA Tianwu is inspired by weddings and the relaxed atmosphere of southern France. The venue will feature French-style floral arrangements, outdoor music, food trucks, and a bar, alongside crepes and wine.

French-language musical The Red Shoes

• When: Aug 21 to 23
• Where: Shanghai City Theatre, No 4889 Dushi Road, Minhang district

The original French-language musical The Red Shoes will come to Shanghai as part of its first tour of China this August. The story follows Isabelle, a young woman who arrives in Paris, determined to become a principal ballerina at the Paris Opera.

She encounters Victor, a gifted choreographer working on a ballet centered on a pair of cursed red shoes. When the shoes choose Isabelle, she must confront a curse that promises glory but requires her to sacrifice love forever.

 

Italy

Salute! Italian Wine Festival

• When: Through Aug 16, noon to 10 pm
• Where: L1 Atrium, Xintiandi Style I, No 6 Alley 123, Xingye Road, Huangpu district

Italian wines take the spotlight at this festival in Xintiandi, with a selection ranging from white and sparkling wines to young reds and more complex styles. Visitors can also explore natural wines and orange wines.

The food lineup includes Italian favorites such as pizza, pasta, gelato, and ham platters.

 

Kazakhstan

Ancestral Heritage: Continuity of Tradition — Exhibition of Kazakh Folk Culture

• When: Through Aug 30
• Where: 3F, West Building, Shanghai History Museum, No 325 West Nanjing Road, Huangpu district

Kazakhstan, the world's largest landlocked country and an important stop along the ancient Silk Road, is the focus of this exhibition organized by the Shanghai History Museum in collaboration with the Almaty Museum Association.

The displays offer a look into the history of Almaty, Kazakh jewelry, traditional musical instruments, and the country's eagle-hunting tradition, including the berkutchi, or eagle hunters. Together, the exhibits offer a glimpse into the daily life, craftsmanship, and cultural traditions of Kazakhstan's nomadic communities.

 

Southeast Asia

Nanyang Yeah Night Market

• When: Aug 28 to Sept 6, Fridays to Sundays, 3 pm to 10 pm
• Where: The Place, No 100 Zunyi Road, Changning district

The night market will bring together Southeast Asian snacks, handcrafted goods, and live music. Visitors can wander through the stalls, sample a range of Southeast Asian street food, and enjoy live performances.

Thai Food Festival

• When: Through Aug 29, Fridays and Saturdays, 6 pm to 9 pm
• Where: Grand Millennium Shanghai Hongqiao, No 2588 West Yan'an Road, Changning district

The festival features a Thai-themed buffet prepared jointly by Thai guest chefs and the hotel's culinary team, with dozens of Thai dishes on offer. Highlights include tom yum soup, Bangkok-style volcano ribs, and stir-fried crab with coconut curry.

Live cooking stations serve freshly prepared green papaya salad and boat noodles. The dessert selection includes mango sticky rice, pandan cake, Thai pudding, and fresh young coconut.

 

South Korea

K-Stationery Festival

• When: Aug 14 to 16, 10 am to 6 pm
• Where: 2F Atrium, Changfeng Joy City, No 196 Daduhe Road, Putuo district

The K-Stationery Festival brings more than 100 South Korean stationery and creative-product brands to Shanghai. More than 15 brands are making either their China debut or their first appearance in Shanghai. Three South Korean illustrators will also attend for signing sessions during the festival. Visitors who complete designated activities can receive limited-edition gifts.
