A comprehensive guide to the Shanghai Museum
The phenomenal exhibition On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt wrapped up at the Shanghai Museum on Aug 17, concluding a 13-month journey through the wonders of ancient Egypt.
But there's much more to explore beyond this headline-making event.
Founded in 1952, the Shanghai Museum is one of the world's premier institutions for ancient Chinese art and among the first to be recognized as a national first-class museum. It hosts one of the most comprehensive collections of ancient Chinese culture anywhere.
The museum has two major sites: the Shanghai Museum on People's Square and the Shanghai Museum East. A third site in Yangpu district is scheduled to be completed before 2030.
Shanghai Museum on People's Square

This museum emphasizes international cultural exchange, hosting special exhibitions in collaboration with museums worldwide. Its permanent galleries showcase the treasures of Chinese art, while special exhibitions spark conversations with global collections, offering visitors a bridge between cultures.
