Shanghai has become one of the first cities in the country to pilot the opening of value-added telecommunication services to foreign-funded firms.

Starting from Nov 25, foreign-invested firms are allowed to independently operate their own Internet Data Centers and other telecommunications businesses, including online data processing and trading.

That's within two areas in the city — the Lin-gang Special Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and the pioneer area for socialist modernization in the Pudong New Area.

The initiative was announced by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization and the Shanghai Communications Administration.

It is said to mark a major step in Shanghai's efforts to enhance its position as a global hub for technology and innovation.

Expected to boost the development of Shanghai's digital economy, the initiative provides new opportunities for foreign investors and fosters a more competitive and dynamic market environment.

Qualified enterprises interested in participating in the pilot program can apply through the service portal of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology at https://ythzxfw.miit.gov.cn.
