Norway demonstrated its commitment to cooperating with China in green tech applications at IE expo China 2026, Asia's leading trade fair for environmental technologies, which was held in Shanghai from April 13 to 15.

Organized by Innovation Norway with support from the Consulate General of Norway in Shanghai, the Norway Pavilion featured technologies addressing environmental challenges while promoting low-carbon development.

Norway is committed to strengthening green cooperation with China, said Tobias Svenningsen, consul general of Norway in Shanghai.

Svenningsen highlighted the strengths of smaller, highly specialized Norwegian firms, describing them as "hidden champions" with smart solutions that can help Chinese businesses and cities significantly reduce costs.

Five Norwegian companies already active in China — Tomra, Cambi, Orkel, Doscon, and Johnsen Chemicals — presented solutions in waste and water management at the expo.

Svenningsen pointed to the potential for China and Norway to cooperate in hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, areas where Norway has invested heavily.

"If China moves on to greening its industry, specifically the steel and shipbuilding sectors, CCS is a key technology that you need to achieve rather than an option," Svenningsen said.

Kristoffersen, the commercial counsellor at the Norwegian Embassy in China, noted the positive impact of China prioritizing hydrogen technology, encouraging Norwegian hydrogen companies to enter the Chinese market.

Svenningsen said that "being seen as a local entity contributing to value creation is key for long-term success."
