Shanghai is gearing up to host one of the largest exhibitions of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the past two decades at the Shanghai Museum from July 2024 to August 2025, according to a joint announcement by the museum and Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.
Titled On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt, the exhibition features 492 sets of over 780 precious cultural relics from different periods of ancient Egypt. Among these, over 95 percent will be shown in Asia for the first time, showcasing the ancient Egyptian civilization and its latest archaeological discoveries and promoting exchanges between Chinese and Egyptian civilizations.
Chu Xiaobo, director of the Shanghai Museum, said that these ancient Egyptian artifacts, including statues of pharaohs like Tutankhamun, Amenemhat III and Ramses II, will be transported from Cairo to Shanghai by charter flights and are set to arrive in the middle of June.
The Shanghai Museum has dispatched a team of six to Cairo for inventory and packaging of artifacts to ensure the smooth preparation of the event, which is set to debut in Shanghai on July 19.
