The Eternal Notre-Dame VR digital immersion exhibition made its debut in Shanghai on July 12, symbolizing a significant moment in cultural collaboration between China and France.
As part of the Croisements Festival project commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations, this immersive experience enables visitors to explore the pre-fire splendor of the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
A joint effort by Jiushi Culture Communication, France Telecom Orange, the City of Paris, and VR studio Excurio, the exhibition is exclusively authorized by HTC (VIVE Arts) for the Asia-Pacific region.
Through 45-minute VR excursions, participants are transported into the rich history, artistry, and architectural magnificence of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, offering a glimpse into its allure while it undergoes restoration and remains closed to the public.
The exhibition presents an immersive voyage through the cathedral, allowing guests to freely navigate the virtual realm from a first-person perspective.
Equipped with HTC VIVE Focus 3 headsets, visitors can engage with one another in real-time, fostering a shared experience. The meticulous recreation of the Notre-Dame Cathedral's exterior and interior was achieved through high-resolution scanning technology.
Developed over a two-year period by a team of 25 technicians under the guidance of five international experts and historians, the exhibition spans 1,000 square meters of immersive VR space. Recognized as a finalist for the VR Awards' VR Location-Based Entertainment of the Year, the project underscores Excurio's commitment to technological advancement. Its debut in Paris drew nearly 100,000 visitors, signifying its global appeal.
To ensure inclusivity, the exhibition has been enhanced to eliminate the need for heavy devices, catering to glasses-wearers and individuals with mobility challenges. With VR technology and 3D animations, over 100 attendees can simultaneously embark on a virtual exploration of the Notre-Dame Cathedral.
Moreover, Eternal Notre-Dame offers a glimpse into the ongoing restoration process of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, showcasing both its history and previously inaccessible areas.
The exhibition will run until Feb 28, 2025.
