The 2024 Shanghai Lujiazui Cup Open fencing tournament kicked off on Aug 12 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, attracting 3,000 young fencers from various regions of China. This prestigious B-level certified event, recognized as the highest-ranked youth fencing competition in Shanghai, marks the long-awaited return of B-level tournaments to the city after a hiatus of several years.

The opening ceremony dazzled spectators with a vibrant showcase of athleticism and sportsmanship as athletes, donned in traditional white fencing attire, engaged in exhilarating duels across three weapon categories: foil, épée, and sabre.

Spanning two days, the tournament features individual and team competitions tailored to various age groups, ranging from U6 to 17+. The individual events incorporate a blend of pool play and direct elimination rounds, while the team events will be decided through an intense knockout format.

Zhang Yueqi, vice president of the Chinese Fencing Association, expressed his enthusiasm for the return of B-level events to Pudong, emphasizing the positive impact on promoting fencing and fostering a culture of fitness activities.

"Introducing young athletes to the sport of fencing not only nurtures their skills but also lays the groundwork for developing future talent in competitive sports," Zhang said.

In a gesture of recognition and encouragement, the organizers have handpicked 12 athletes to serve as ambassadors for the tournament, acknowledging their commitment and proficiency in the sport. These young ambassadors symbolize the aspirations of numerous participants, eager to refine their abilities and pursue their love for fencing.

Reflecting on the honor of being selected as an ambassador, 12-year-old competitor Zhang Haotian shared his sentiments, saying, "Seeing my image showcased in Lujiazui is truly a privilege. I hope to learn from stronger opponents and enhance both my physical and mental capabilities."
