In a showcase of athletic prowess and international camaraderie, Shanghai Jiao Tong University's men's and women's basketball teams emerged victorious against their counterparts from New York University, culminating in the conclusion of the 2024 Buick Campus Invitational held at SJTU's Minhang campus on Aug 16.

The inaugural basketball event, organized by Great Sports and Entertainment Sports Programming Network, captivated thousands of fans who gathered to witness the intense competition and partake in a range of interactive activities, underscoring a spirit of sportsmanship and cultural exchange.

To ensure an optimal experience for attendees, the organizing committee recruited over 80 volunteers, a dedicated medical team, and a proficient officiating group to cater to the needs of fans and student-athletes within the venue.

Scott Walker, the US Consul General in Shanghai, lauded the event, highlighting the unique ability of sports to transcend boundaries and unite individuals beyond the realm of competition, emphasizing the role of sports in fostering connections and understanding among diverse communities.

For many student-athletes from New York University, the event marked their inaugural visit to Shanghai and China. Upon arrival, they were warmly welcomed and immersed in a week-long cultural odyssey across the city, guided by their counterparts from SJTU who assumed the role of gracious hosts and tour guides throughout the journey.

Reflecting on his experience, Zay Freeney, a member of the NYU men's basketball team, expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by Shanghai, drawing parallels between the bustling metropolis and his hometown of New York City.

"This trip has been nothing but a blessing. I'm grateful for the hospitality that Shanghai has presented us with. I really related back to New York City. (There's) so much to do, (and) so much to see. I look forward to being back here someday, hopefully," said  Freeney.
