Shanghai online literature week highlights innovation, global reach
The third Shanghai International Online Literature Week kicked off on Dec 16.
Organized by the Yuewen Group with support from the Xuhui district government, the event welcomed participants from 16 countries to explore the development and global influence of Chinese online literature.
During the opening ceremony, Huang Binbing, deputy director of the publicity department of the Communist Party of China Shanghai Committee, lauded the pivotal role of Chinese web novels in not only bolstering cultural exports but also nurturing a dynamic content creation ecosystem tailored for the digital era.
Emphasizing the industry's shift from rapid expansion to a phase of high-quality development, Huang underscored the importance of global collaboration in crafting new intellectual properties and leveraging cutting-edge technologies to propel innovation.
A comprehensive report by the China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association unveiled key industry trends, including the rise of artificial intelligence-driven translation, the collaborative creation of global IPs, and the deep-seated influence of Chinese content on the popular culture of Generation Z worldwide.
The report highlighted the growth of the Chinese online literature market overseas, with revenues reaching 4.35 billion yuan ($597.26 million), reflecting a notable year-on-year increase of 7.06 percent.

Hou emphasized the imperative of expediting content exports and fostering deeper international partnerships to expand the global IP ecosystem, positioning Chinese online literature for sustained international prominence.

Running through Dec 18, the event featured a diverse lineup of activities, including a writers' roundtable, the 2024 WebNovel Spirity Awards ceremony, and engaging thematic discussions on the internationalization of Chinese dramas and literature.
