A market fair featuring museum merchandise was held at the Zikawei Library in Shanghai from May 16 to 18, marking the first in a series of events celebrating the opening of the 2025 Shanghai Cultural Heritage Season.

According to the municipal administration of culture and tourism, the 2025 Shanghai Cultural Heritage Season centers around International Museum Day on May 18 and China's Cultural and Natural Heritage Day, which has been observed on the second Saturday of June since 2006.

Running from May 16 to the end of June, the city's museums, memorial halls, and other cultural institutions are hosting six major themed programs — such as exhibitions, music tours, markets, and art education initiatives — designed to offer an immersive cultural experience to residents and tourists alike.

As of the end of 2024, Shanghai had 171 registered museums. In 2023, they held 949 exhibitions and welcomed a record 40.86 million visitors — an increase of 31.9 percent from the previous year.
