The 2025 Suhewan Shanghai Paddling Open will take place from May 24 to 25 along the Jing'an section of Suzhou Creek, attracting over 400 paddleboarding enthusiasts from the Yangtze River Delta region.

The event is organized by the Jing'an district sports bureau and Shanghai Suhewan Group. It aims to highlight the integration of sports, culture, and urban development under Shanghai's "One River, One Creek" strategic plan, which seeks to advance the planning and construction, landscape upgrading, and functional enhancement along the banks of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25).

The two-day competition features three core categories: straight course sprint, slalom skills race, and long-distance cruise race, catering to participants aged 12 to 60. With 168 adult athletes, 93 youth competitors, and 122 corporate team members, the total participant entries exceed 800, reflecting a significant increase from the inaugural edition in 2023.

The racing zone spans from Anyuan Road Bridge to the North-South Elevated Road, passing through Butterfly Bay Park—a key waterfront landmark in Suzhou Creek.

"Paddleboarding has evolved into a global phenomenon, with iconic events such as those on Paris' Seine River attracting thousands of participants," said Ma Jiabin, director of Jing'an District Sports Bureau. "By showcasing its scenic beauty and cultural heritage through this dynamic sport, we aim to elevate Suzhou Creek's international profile while fostering deeper integration between sports and urban development."

Ma added that the annual event has doubled its watercraft capacity from 100 to 200 athletes simultaneously on the course. "Next year, we plan to extend the course from three to six kilometers, giving participants the opportunity to enjoy all 12 bridges and the scenic Suzhou Creek landscape."

Zhu Mingsheng, chairman of Shanghai Suhewan Group, emphasized the district's waterfront transformation achievements: "Through lowering the walls to reveal historical sites, connecting fragmented sections and upgrading the greenery and lighting, we've created a cohesive, accessible public space."

To ensure a seamless experience, the event will deploy rescue boats, lifeguards, and national-level referees. A total of 303 security personnel and 150 volunteers will manage logistics, while medical stations and rest areas are strategically positioned along the route.
