Exhibition commemorating US writer Pearl S. Buck opens

An exhibition commemorating US writer Pearl S. Buck opened at the Shanghai Library Huaihai Road branch on June 7, unveiling the stories of how her works bridge Chinese and Western culture.
The exhibition, titled Pearls of the East, Harmony with the West, was curated by Shanghai Library, Shanghai Art Collection Museum, and New York Public Library.
By displaying Buck's scripts, letters, photos, videos, documentaries, and personal objects, the exhibition focuses on her deep connection with China and her efforts in cross-cultural communication.
Born on June 26, 1892 in West Virginia, Buck was brought to China by her parents when she was only 10 months old. She lived in China for about 40 years and spent a significant portion of that time in Shanghai.
The exhibition is composed of three chapters. The first part focuses on her affinity for China, the second part on how she facilitated cross-border communication, and the third part on how she promoted the integration of cultures.
Among the exhibits are her award certifications as Nobel Laureate in Literature and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the script of her signature work The Good Earth, and photos from the movie based on the novel.
Brent Reidy, director of the Research Libraries at the New York Public Library, said in a video speech that the influence of Buck's work is everlasting. Buck broke cultural boundaries with her works and reminds us to cherish humanity in the complex world.
