Argentine film masters showcase to open in Shanghai
Shanghai will host the Argentine Masters Film Festival at the Shanghai Film Art Center from Aug 15 to 24, showcasing eight landmark works by acclaimed directors.
The lineup celebrates Argentina's distinctive cinematic artistry, spanning genres from mystery and musicals to literary adaptations.
Featured films include:
1. Corsini interpreta a Blomberg y Maciel (2021), directed by and starring Mariano Llinás, follows a musical re-recording project that links 1929 composers with the historical figure Juan Manuel de Rosas.
2. Balnearios (2002), also directed by Llinás, is an award-winning documentary portrait of Argentina's changing seaside towns.
3. Trenque Lauquen (Parts I & II, 2022), directed by Laura Citarella, is a Venice-nominated 260-minute mystery tracing a woman's disappearance through fragmented memories.
4. The Headless Woman (2008), directed by Lucrecia Martel, is a Cannes-selected study of the moral dilemmas in Argentina’s middle class.
5. Rosaura at 10 O'Clock (Spanish: Rosaura a las diez) (1958), directed by Mario Soffici, is a classic suspense film in which a love letter reveals voyeurism and the complexities of human nature.
6. Our Last Tango (2015), produced by Wim Wenders, is a documentary on Argentina's most celebrated tango partners, María Nieves Rego and Juan Carlos Copes.
7. The Little Match Girl (2017), directed by Alejo Moguillansky, reimagines Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale, blending it with a Bressonian parable.
8. Man on Pink Corner (1962), directed by René Mugica, is a Borges adaptation following a hitman's quest for redemption.
