Shanghai's intangible cultural heritage enchants Casablanca
An exhibition on Shanghai's intangible cultural heritage opened in Casablanca on Sept 12, presenting the city's rich traditions to Morocco in a large-scale showcase for the first time.
The collection, blending tradition with innovation, features over 100 artworks, including delicate jade carvings, intricate cloisonne, vibrant farmer’s paintings, and detailed paper-cuttings. Each piece tells a story of Shanghai’s unique cultural heritage.
Highlights include a master lacquer sculpture that uses eggshell mosaics to create strikingly textured mountain landscapes, and the nostalgic paper-cut Spring Comes to Bourgogne, a love letter to Shanghai's shikumen architectural heritage.
The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of China sending medical aid teams to Morocco, while 2026 will celebrate 40 years of the friendship-city partnership between Shanghai and Casablanca.
This exhibition in Casablanca is the fifth stop in an international tour exhibition of traditional Chinese art, following exhibitions in Egypt, Turkiye, Slovakia, and Indonesia.
Open to the public free of charge until Oct 12, this exhibition serves as a bridge for cross-cultural connection, inviting everyone to experience the timeless beauty and innovative spirit of Shanghai's intangible heritage.
