Shanghai will host two major rowing events, the 2026 Head of Shanghai River Regatta and the World Rowing Shanghai Sprints, from Sept 24 to 27 on Suzhou Creek.

The first two days will feature the 6th edition of the Head of Shanghai River Regatta, followed by the debut of the World Rowing Shanghai Sprints.

The Shanghai Sprints is expected to bring together 88 athletes from eight elite teams: the top seven national teams at the 2025 World Rowing Championships and a world team composed of standout rowers from other countries.

Competitors will race in four boat classes in a fast-paced, knockout-format regatta.

All races will be held over a 500-meter, two-lane course on one of Shanghai's most iconic waterways, providing an intense, sprint-style showcase of rowing at the highest level.

"The Shanghai Sprints will be rowing on another scale," said World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland. "Shanghai has a rich connection with our sport. This new event will both celebrate and strengthen that relationship while creating a spectacular new stage for the world's best rowers and enabling a recurring showcase of our sport at the highest levels."
