Formula E drivers try their hand at making soup dumplings in Shanghai
Formula E World Championship drivers and team members visited Nanxiang Old Street in Shanghai's Jiading district on July 2, ahead of the Shanghai race weekend, for a hands-on experience of making and tasting Nanxiang xiaolongbao, or bite-sized soup dumplings.
During the visit, local xiaolongbao artisans introduced the history and craftsmanship of Nanxiang xiaolongbao before guiding the guests through the process of making and tasting them. The delicacy dates back to 1871, and its preparation technique was added to China’s intangible cultural heritage list in 2014.
Zane Maloney, a Barbadian driver for the Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team, said he has long been interested in Chinese culture and cuisine.
"China is very far away from where I'm from. It's always nice to see different cultures around the world," he said.
Maloney said he arrived in Shanghai on June 26, giving him more time to explore the city than during last year's visit.
"Every night, we were eating at a different local restaurant. It was very nice, and I think everyone is very welcoming in Shanghai," he said.
Beyond the food, Maloney said he was also impressed by the convenience of daily life in China.
"You have to use Didi (China's ride-hailing app) and other apps to get around. Initially, it's a bit different from what we're used to. But once you get used to it, it's very efficient," he said.
Natalie Hettle, senior event experience manager at Formula E, said it was her second visit to Shanghai and her first time making xiaolongbao.
"It's been a really great experience. I don't think I would have ever come here if it wasn't for Formula E. It has opened up so many more opportunities for me to explore the city," she said.
