Taking glass and porcelain as their media of choice, two exhibitions at the Shanghai Jiushi Art Museum have opened a dialogue between Eastern and Western aesthetics.

The exhibition titled Glasstress: The Flowing Carnival of Venice brings together artists from 19 countries, challenging the conventional perception of glass as merely a decorative craft.

Taking the Venice Carnival as its narrative thread, the exhibition turns masks, costumes, and parades into expressions in glass, and uses them as metaphors for deeper themes such as individual identity and the convergence of civilizations.

At the same time, the exhibition Worlds Within a Glaze: Ming and Qing Monochromes from the Shanghai Museum is also underway. It showcases 50 pieces of exquisite monochrome glazed porcelain dating from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. With just the slightest touch of ornamentation, these works let a single glaze color speak for itself, showing the beauty of simplicity.
