Shanghai recently played host to a lively cultural exchange, as Japanese and Chinese university students came together for the "Shanghai in our Eyes" program.

The event culminated in a significant exchange session at the Shanghai United Media Group on Sept 4.

The initiative, which kicked off on Sept 1, invited 100 Japanese students to immerse themselves in Shanghai's rich cultural, historical and technological environment over a six-day period.

Yuki Aoyama, at Chuo University in Tokyo, expressed his admiration for China's relentless development, adding: "China is truly a place you never tire of visiting. In Shanghai, I am once again struck by the country's continuous development".

Yuki emphasized the importance of the exchange programs in nurturing cross-cultural understanding and expressed hope for more collaborative events in the future.

Throughout their stay, the students embarked on a journey to explore Shanghai's cultural heritage – visiting iconic landmarks like Lu Xun Park and the Shanghai Yue Opera House to witness the artistry of intangible cultural traditions.

They also delved into the city's technological prowess through visits to innovative internet companies, while taking in the nightscape along the Huangpu River and engaging in spirited dialogues with their Chinese counterparts.

Reflecting on the impact of cultural exchanges, Shao Chuyi at Sophia University in Chiyoda City in Japan, highlighted the evolution of her personal worldview through such experiences.

She shared a poignant conversation with a Japanese peer who sought to challenge stereotypes by studying Chinese culture firsthand –underscoring the importance of breaking down prejudices and fostering genuine understanding through personal interactions.

Zhang Jing, at East China University of Political Science and Law, emphasized the significance of the exchange in reshaping perceptions and building bridges between the two nations – as well as expressing anticipation for more diverse and colorful exchanges between China and Japan in the future.
