For nearly two decades, British lawyer Rachel Turner has made Shanghai her second home. As a partner at the law firm Pinsent Masons, she specializes in international arbitration and cross-border dispute resolution, advising Chinese enterprises on overseas infrastructure and energy projects under the Belt and Road Initiative.

According to Turner, Shanghai offers a unique ecosystem for international legal practice. Its open business climate, excellent global transportation links, and flourishing high-end professional services sector combine to make it an ideal base for law firms helping Chinese companies expand internationally.

"We have been based in Jing'an district for over 15 years," she says. "We've developed a strong working relationship with Jing'an, supporting its role as an international business hub."

Beyond serving clients, she maintains close collaboration with Shanghai's municipal departments and industry associations, co-hosting seminars on cross-border compliance and overseas legal risk mitigation to share actionable insights with hundreds of local enterprises.

Away from the demands of legal practice, Turner finds comfort in Shanghai's unique blend of ancient heritage and modern dynamism. Despite her busy schedule, she often takes time to visit the Jing'an Temple near her office, finding moments of tranquility amid the city's lively pace.

Shanghai has also been where Turner's family has grown and flourished. Her 15-year-old daughter Gabriella McGeehin, raised in the city, speaks fluent Mandarin. Immersed in both British and Chinese cultures, she sees herself as a global citizen who draws inspiration and strength from both traditions.

Having spent nearly 20 years here, Turner views Shanghai as far more than a workplace. It is the city where she built her professional career, raised her daughter, and forged deep cross-cultural bonds with local communities.
